Mission statement
Introduction
We are an isolated rural community situated at the North end of the Hokianga harbour. Our main client base are 95% Maori who affiliate to (11) Marae in our area (Motukiore, Utakura, Horeke, Rahiri, Orira, Mangamuka & Mangataipa). A high number of the people in the area are unemployed, live in poor housing with poor health and are generally at the lower end of the socio economic ladder. The area is resource rich (people, harbour, bush, mountains) but remains limited to opportunities to improve.
Our most active strategies to date are: Education and Te Reo Maori.
Maori educational attainment levels rank the lowest in the country and is therefore of major concern, a community is weakest because of its lowest point and at present one of the weak links within Maori is education.
Education leads to better quality employment opportunities and thus higher income levels that can provide kai, shelter and a reasonable amount of freedom of choice, security and stability. It is not by itself the answer to all Maori issues, but can certainly ease a lot of pressure whanau are currently under.
Tino rangatiratanga is the future; education is one of the vehicles that will take us to Maori sovereignty.
It is this need that has prompted us to address the issue of low Maori educational attainment levels within its rohe, in order to not only respond positively to the challenges we face, but to also take advantage of opportunities that arise.
